Futures

This collection of work was motivated by inspirational women in the worlds of art and activism, exploring the impact that women like Jenny Holzer, Tracey Emin, Mary Wolstonecraft, Guerrilla Girls, Barbara Kruger and Sister Corita Kent have had on women’s rights.

Linking figures from the past and present through a combination of modern and traditional image making processes resulted in an installation comprising of manipulated text cut from vinyl, a series of laser cut images based on the weighted words of women featured in the project and four books with hand printed photographic imagery using lithography interspersed with laser cut quotes.

The work plays with appropriation, found image and text manipulation. The relationship between old and new touches upon the current economic issues regarding visual arts funding cuts by experimenting with the political value of aesthetics. This is highlighted by the process of using modern technology to produce imagery on a mixture of affordable newsprint and vinyl off cuts.

The work inspires discussion in the viewer and celebrates powerful women that have influenced the way people explore politics, art and the relationship between them.
